|| 01 | REALITY OF RELIGION | ROR | PART 006 ||

Similarly , when deeply engrossed in achieving one's desired object or meeting one's beloved , one is one with one's goal , forgets everything else and becomes happiness incarnate , for the time being .

One loses one's egoism for that moment .

You will , thus , see that when one submerges mind , intellect and ego in one's desired object , one acquires a state of self-forgetfulness , and is in communion with the One , " Atma " or the Real Self .

The windows of eternal bliss are opened .
One becomes Omniscient , Omnipotent and All-Bliss .

But when we return from that self-forgetfulness stage to the phenomenal world and become conscious of worldly conditions and limitations , we are driven away from the Real Self .

It is , as if , water , the Reality has got hidden under the cover of the waves or the bubbles .

Then the inner gates of the Sovereignty of Heaven are closed .

One cannot enjoy the Bliss , because one is now overpowered by the ignorance , fear and weakness .

As a matter of fact , our mind , intellect and ego limit us .

We have to be above them , in order to be really free and to achieve our desired goal , " Atma " or " Real Self " .

You know , the power and activity of the mind and senses are derived from Atma or the inner Self .

Losing or merging them into Atma means attaining immortality .

Just as , when the names and forms of the waves are lost , they become the immortal ocean .

So , too , when consciousness of individuality is merged in Real Self , one becomes Brahman .

Everyone after deep sleep gets refreshed and feels rejuvenated .

Why ?  Because in the deep sleep state , the conscious mind and senses are lost and merged into the Real Self or Atma .

It is only the " Atma " that subsists and maintains .

QUESTION : What will help us to achieve the goal of religion ?

RAMA : WITH REGARD TO SUCH HELP —

( 1 ) Take only simple diet and that also in such quantity as may be easily digested .

( 2 ) Have full sleep .

( 3 ) Take physical exercise regularly , both in the morning and in the evening  .

( 4 ) Avoid , as far as possible , the company of those persons who may disturb your peace of mind , incite enmity or hatred .

It is good to have the company of spiritually minded people , otherwise , it is better to remain alone .

( 5 ) Follow truthfulness in thoughts , words , and deeds .

Be generous in dealings , charitable in disposition and helpful to others in your daily life .

These few steps may help us to attain the goal of religion .

QUESTION : Does caste , age , time , place , diet and company of people affect the practice of religion ?

RAMA : Yes , they do affect .

The state of mind of an ordinary human being does depend upon the external and internal conditions being faced by the aspirant .

As such , the state of mind is apt to be changed with the change in the environment .

This is the reason why education and culture produce a tangible effect on the mind .

It is natural that the practice of religion depends on the state of mind .

The more congenial is the mind , more near you draw yourself to the goal .

With regards to the heredity , we should not forget that Real Self of everyone is GOD or Atma .

But on the phenomenal plane the heredity or the result of heredity seems to be different from human to human .

In the case of vegetables and lower animals , the effect of heredity is greater ; there is no room for change .

But in the case of human beings , the influence of education , culture and society may prove to be stronger than the forces of heredity .

QUESTION : Will blind faith and book-knowledge suffice to achieve the goal of religion in this very life ?  If so , what is the practice which may produce satisfactory results ?

RAMA : Mere bookish knowledge and blind faith , bereft of practical experience , will be of no avail and will not lead you much further , but the continuous practice of righteousness in life can give satisfactory result and can ultimately bestow " Jiwan Mukti " and make you completely free from sorrow , anger and sin .

For this , you have to practise GODliness and lead divine life in thought and deeds , by considering everyone like your own Self and by rising above the limitations of the body , mind and intellect .

As regards satisfactory results , in the words of a Persian poet :—

" Wealth will be your slave and prosperity will dance at your tune like a servant . "

The need is to delve deep in divine life and , sins and sorrows shall all be eradicated automatically .

QUESTION : Can an ordinary person attain the goal of religion , without the help of an experienced Guru or a spiritual guide ?

RAMA : Do you mean by the term " ordinary person " , one whose spiritual eagerness has not developed into the engrossing intensity of Divine Love ?

If so , such a person cannot attain the desired goal , even if one gets the advantage of the most experienced spiritual guide .

Thousands of nobles and rulers came into contact with Lord Krishna , but no one was given the sermon of Gita .

It was Arjuna alone , who was found deserving to listen to the teachings of Gita , and , that too , at a time when Arjuna was fed up with the world and could not decide what ought to be done because of being overpowered by attachment ( Moha ) of worldly relations .

Arjuna lost sight of discretion and had ultimately surrendered at the feet of the Master for guidance .

If , however , there is intense desire in the aspirant , some experienced preceptor is bound to come and help .

This is the Law .

Have you not seen a burning coal drawing oxygen to keep it alive ?

Remember the power of the fire of Divine Love .

It is not so weak that it will not attract the spiritually developed preceptor to guide the deserving one .

It is , therefore , wrong to suppose that an earnest and deserving seeker may be deprived of the necessary help .
